In a move to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities against Russian aggression, the United States has announced a $6 billion additional aid package, including the provision of Patriot missiles for its air defense systems.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized the need for at least seven Patriot systems to protect Ukrainian cities, as part of the package that also includes more munitions for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and additional gear to integrate Western air defense launchers, missiles, and radars into Ukraine’s existing weaponry.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin revealed the aid package during a Pentagon-led meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, stating that the funding will be allocated through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. The package will also include High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), Switchblade and Puma drones, counter drone systems, and artillery.
Since Russia’s invasion in 2022, the U.S. has sent over $44 billion worth of weapons, maintenance, training, and spare parts to Ukraine. The latest aid package follows the White House’s approval of $1 billion in weapons and equipment delivery to Ukraine.
These aid approvals come as a result of a new infusion of about $61 billion in funding for Ukraine passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden. With tensions escalating in the region, the additional aid package aims to support Ukraine in defending its sovereignty and protecting its citizens against further aggression.
