On Monday April 8, sky gazers in the US will have the chance to witness the first total eclipse since 2017. However, the opportunity comes at a cost, as prices for accommodations and flights along the eclipse path are skyrocketing.
Cities like Killeen, Texas; Terre Haute, Indiana; Cape Girardeau, Missouri; and Burlington, Vermont are seeing accommodations being offered at exorbitant prices. Some hotels are fully booked, while others are charging ten times their usual rates. In an effort to fundraise, a church in Burlington, Vermont is even renting out accommodations for the eclipse.
Flight prices to cities along the eclipse path are also on the rise, with travelers experiencing significantly higher costs compared to other days. Some serious eclipse hunters are making multiple reservations at hotels and planning to cancel last minute in order to secure the best viewing spot.
For those who are willing to splurge, private jet services are being used to chase the eclipse. David Makepeace, an eclipse chaser, has opted to lead a group to Mexico to view the eclipse from the beach after finding prices too high in Texas.
However, for those looking for a cheaper alternative, eclipse glasses are available for as low as $2.50 per pair. With all the excitement building up for the upcoming eclipse, it seems that sky gazers are determined to witness this rare event, no matter the cost.
