Netflix Reveals Streaming Data for the First Half of 2023
In a groundbreaking move, Netflix has released streaming data for over 18,000 movies and TV shows for the first half of 2023. This release provides valuable insights into the engagement levels of Netflix’s vast subscriber base, which currently stands just under 239 million.
The data primarily focuses on the total hours viewed, which is the metric Netflix uses to measure engagement. However, it is important to note that this is not the same metric used for the platform’s weekly top 10 lists. Despite this difference, the data offers a fascinating glimpse into the viewing habits of Netflix users.
Notably, Wednesday, a series with a shorter run time, ranks fourth on the list of titles but takes the coveted first place in Netflix’s all-time English-language series rankings. This highlights the impact of show lengths on overall viewership.
Diversity also plays a significant role in the data, with six out of the top 25 titles featuring Latinx lead or co-lead actors, and an additional nine titles highlighting people of color in lead or co-lead roles. Furthermore, six of the top 25 titles are in languages other than English, with dubbed versions available for a wider audience.
The data also sheds light on canceled shows that still managed to gather significant viewing numbers. Sex/Life takes the crown as the most-watched canceled show, followed closely by Shadow and Bone. Despite being off Netflix in the United States since 2020, The Office continues to be a global hit, accumulating a staggering 341.1 million hours of viewing worldwide.
However, it’s not all about the big hits. Approximately 21% of the entries on the list saw relatively low viewing hours, with Making the Witcher: Blood Origin being the least watched Netflix original.
Among the top 20 titles on the list, The Night Agent dominates with an impressive 812.1 million hours of viewing. Other notable entries include The Recruit, That ’90s Show, and season four of Suits, each making their mark at different ranks.
Additionally, the data showcases the popularity of diverse content. Season three of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir records 21.4 million hours of viewing, while the movie ’71 gathers 1 million hours of viewership.
It’s worth noting that the majority of titles present on the list had under 950,000 hours of viewing, collectively representing only 3% of the massive 93.46 billion hours of viewing recorded during this period.
Netflix’s decision to provide this data offers a fascinating glimpse into the viewing habits of its subscribers, highlighting the diversity and global appeal of its content. As the streaming giant continues to grow and evolve, this data release sets a new standard for transparency within the industry.
