USTA Ensures Insured Trophies from Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon for 2021 U.S. Open Final
In a move that exemplified their commitment to maintaining the prestige and tradition of the sport of tennis, the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) made sure that insured versions of the trophies from the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon were present at the 2021 U.S. Open final. This final, featuring Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, held immense historical significance as Djokovic aimed to achieve a calendar-year Grand Slam, a feat that has not been accomplished since Rod Laver in 1969.
To make this historical moment even more special, the USTA spared no expense, spending over $50,000 to bring the iconic trophies to New York. However, due to the travel restrictions necessitated by the pandemic, bringing the actual Australian Open trophy to the United States proved to be a challenge. In response to this obstacle, tennis legend Rod Laver provided a replica, which was flown from California to New York in a specially-designed carrying case.
Transporting the Roland Garros trophy also encountered a setback, with delays occurring in customs at New York’s JFK International Airport. Nevertheless, the trophy managed to arrive at the U.S. Open loading dock on time, relieving any concerns about its absence during the crucial final match.
The Wimbledon trophy, on the other hand, was accompanied by two individuals from the tournament’s museum, ensuring its safe arrival. To safeguard these iconic symbols of excellence, they were even temporarily kept in the office of the head of the tournament facility overnight.
If Djokovic had emerged victorious, the 2021 U.S. Open final would have marked the first time in history that all four men’s singles Grand Slam trophies were united in one location. The anticipation surrounding this monumental achievement only added to the excitement surrounding the match.
Looking ahead, tennis fans can expect Djokovic and Medvedev to face each other again in the 2023 U.S. Open final, further solidifying their rivalry. Djokovic, a dominant force in the tennis world, will have a chance to claim his 24th Grand Slam title, surpassing the current record in the sport’s Open era. On the other side of the net, Medvedev will be seeking his first U.S. Open victory and his second major title overall.
As Djokovic approaches this historic matchup, he acknowledges the significance but remains focused and determined, avoiding the overwhelming pressure that can come with making history. With both players showcasing their elite skills and determined mindset, tennis enthusiasts can anticipate an unforgettable clash on the court in the upcoming U.S. Open finals.
