This decision comes as Los Angeles County recently reached the “medium” level of COVID-19 hospital admissions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the week ending on December 23, the CDC reported 10.5 new COVID hospital admissions per 100,000 people in the county.
All health care personnel, regardless of their vaccination status, must now wear masks in patient-care areas. Additionally, visitors to health care facilities are also required to wear masks in these areas. These measures are intended to minimize the risk of transmission within these settings.
The mask-wearing requirement will remain in effect until the county’s COVID-19 hospital admission level falls below the CDC’s medium level for at least 14 consecutive days. As of December 23, Los Angeles County hospitals reported a significant increase in COVID-positive patients, with 609 individuals being treated, up from 259 on November 1. This alarming surge underscores the need for additional precautions.
One possible reason behind the surge is the emergence of new COVID-19 strains, such as JN.1, which is believed to be descended from the BA.2.86 strain. Although the JN.1 strain does not appear to result in more severe cases of COVID-19, it is thought to contribute to the overall increase in cases.
