Australia’s contract to buy nuclear submarines from its American and British allies, announced to great fanfare by the three leaders in California, raises more questions than it answers from Canberra.
368 billion dollars or 229 billion euros. After eighteen months in the works, AUKUS Strategic Defense Partnership has been confirmed in a contract for a staggering amount that has led to the purchase of eight nuclear powered submarines by Australia from its American and British allies. The announcement, made on Tuesday in San Diego during a speech that brought together Anthony Albanese, Joe Biden and Rishi Sunak, raises many questions.
However, everything seems clear on the roadmap. The work to come is certainly monumental, but it will continue for more than three decades and the stages that make it up have been established. The Australians will go through a training phase within American crews, but also in shipyards and specialist schools in partner countries. In 2030, Australia is considering buying three to five Virginia-class submarines. And from 2040, efforts will be directed towards manufacturing new submarines called SSN AUKUS that will combine English design with Australian-American technologies.
