New action comedy series, “Obliterated,” switches from feature film to eight-episode series
In a surprising move, the creators of the upcoming series “Obliterated” have announced that the show was originally intended to be a feature film but has been transformed into an action-packed eight-episode series.
Set in Las Vegas, the show follows an elite special forces team as they race against time to prevent a deal for a nuclear weapon that could potentially devastate the city. The creators, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, believe that the longer format will allow them to delve deeper into the characters’ lives and give each one their own unique adventure.
Described as a mash-up of R-rated comedies like “The Hangover” and adrenaline-pumping action thrillers such as “24” and “Mission Impossible,” “Obliterated” promises to be an explosive combination of humor and heart-pounding suspense.
The creators, who previously worked on the successful Netflix series “Cobra Kai,” also revealed that the forthcoming sixth season of the show will be its final season. Drawing inspiration from their own experiences attending wrap parties during their filmmaking careers, the creators wanted to capture the unrestrained spirit of those events, where inhibitions are thrown out the window and crazy things happen.
In “Obliterated,” the creators wanted to portray American heroes who risk their lives daily on dangerous missions and explore what they would do once a successful mission is completed. With the backdrop of Las Vegas, the show exhibits the city’s glitz and glamour while also addressing the challenges of balancing tension and reality amidst the party atmosphere.
Underlying themes of heroism and celebrating unsung everyday heroes are interwoven throughout the series. The creators emphasize their collaborative process, with each bringing their unique perspectives and working as a team to create an unforgettable viewing experience.
“Obliterated” promises to be a blend of action spectacle, hilarious moments, and edge-of-your-seat suspense, reminiscent of a super-sized, R-rated summer blockbuster in the form of a streaming series. With its unique concept and talented creative team, this series is one to watch out for on the streaming platform.
