Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, recently met with Malta’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carmelo Abela, in Beijing to discuss the importance of maintaining an “open attitude” and “rejecting protectionism” in China-EU relations. The meeting comes at a time when the European Commission has launched an investigation into Chinese electric vehicle imports benefiting from excessive state subsidies.
During the meeting, Wang emphasized China’s consistent support for the EU’s strategic independence and European integration. He reiterated that both sides should firmly support free trade and work towards achieving positive effects of China-EU cooperation.
In light of the ongoing investigation into Chinese electric vehicle imports, Wang’s remarks hold particular significance. The European Commission’s probe aims to determine whether Chinese manufacturers are receiving unfair advantages through state subsidies, which could be detrimental to fair competition within the EU market.
Recognizing the potential impact of this investigation, Wang and Minister Abela agreed to work together to promote China-EU cooperation. Both sides expressed their commitment to fostering a mutually beneficial relationship and contributing to the development of a global free trade system.
China’s Foreign Minister also expressed hope that Malta would continue to play a positive role in the development of China-EU relations. As a member of the European Union, Malta holds influence in shaping EU policies and can contribute significantly to strengthening ties between China and Europe.
Overall, this meeting further emphasized China’s commitment to maintaining an open and cooperative relationship with the European Union. Despite the ongoing investigation into Chinese electric vehicle imports, both sides expressed their determination to support free trade and achieve positive outcomes in China-EU cooperation. As the relationship between China and the EU continues to evolve, it is clear that maintaining an open and non-protectionist attitude is crucial in fostering mutually beneficial ties.
