The South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, is facing backlash as many performers and speakers have decided to boycott the event due to its sponsorship from the US military and defense companies. This protest comes amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in which civilians in Gaza have been severely affected.
Numerous bands, singers, and panelists have announced their withdrawal from the festival, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people and denouncing the festival’s ties to the defense industry. Small bands and indie performers have taken to social media to announce their decisions to cancel their appearances at SXSW.
One of the first artists to pull out of the festival was singer-songwriter Ella Williams, known as “Squirrel Flower,” who cited her objection to SXSW’s connections to the defense industry as the reason for her boycott. The US Army, a major sponsor of the event, has faced criticism for its ties to the festival, along with other defense industry companies.
In response to the boycott, Texas Governor Greg Abbott dismissed the protesting artists with a blunt statement, saying, “Bye. Don’t come back.” However, SXSW organizers have defended their decision to accept sponsors from the defense industry while also expressing respect for the artists’ choice to boycott.
Despite the cancellations, some artists plan to continue with their other scheduled shows in Austin. Meanwhile, a rally is scheduled for Thursday evening outside a SXSW venue, hosted by the Austin for Palestine Coalition and United Musicians and Allied Workers group to address the issue.
The festival, known for its conferences, music showcases, film screenings, and exhibitions, has drawn in a significant number of attendees each year. However, this year’s event has been marred by controversy due to the protests against its sponsorship from the US military and defense companies.
