Apple Issues Security Alert for Mercenary Spyware Attack in 92 Countries
In a rare move, Apple has sent out security alerts to iPhone users in 92 countries, warning of a mercenary spyware attack targeting specific individuals. These attackers are known to be costly and highly focused, with the ability to remotely access sensitive data, communications, andnand even device features like the camera and microphone.
Among the affected countries is India, though there has been no confirmation if the United States was also targeted. Apple has urged recipients of the alert to seek expert help from the Digital Security Helpline by Access Now, the company that referenced the NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware in the threat notification.
This is not the first time Apple has had run-ins with the NSO Group, as they previously filed a lawsuit against them for surveillance and targeting of Apple users using Pegasus. Cyberwatchdogs have uncovered instances of Pegasus being used to monitor journalists, lawyers, political dissidents, and human rights activists.
In light of these recent events, Apple has placed a strong emphasis on the importance of data security and protection against spyware like Pegasus. With the ever-increasing threat of cyber attacks on individuals, it is crucial for all iPhone users to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard their personal information from prying eyes.
