Apple has recently announced the release of iOS 17.4, which includes a groundbreaking feature that allows iPhone users in the European Union to access third-party app stores for the first time. This move comes as a result of the regulatory framework set by the Digital Markets Act, which aims to promote competition and consumer choice within the digital marketplace.
One key aspect of this update is that EU users traveling outside of the bloc will have a “grace period” before some features stop working when they’re away. This means that users can still access their preferred alternative app markets even when they are outside of the EU, providing them with more flexibility and options for app downloads.
Privacy and security-conscious users will also be pleased to know that they can now set their preferred alternative app store as the default App Store, giving them more control over their digital experience. Additionally, parents can utilize a Screen Time setting to control whether their children’s devices can install apps from alternative app marketplaces, ensuring a safer browsing experience for younger users.
In order to access these alternative app marketplaces, users must ensure that their Apple ID is set to an EU country and that they are physically located within the EU. The first alternative app marketplace, Mobivention App Marketplace, is set to launch in the EU this week, with other companies like MacPaw and Epic Games also planning to offer their own alternative app stores in the near future.
It is important to note that these changes only apply within the EU and do not extend to iPadOS in any country. This update marks a significant shift in Apple’s approach to app distribution and provides EU users with more choices and control over their digital devices.
