South Minneapolis homeowner, Lori Harney, was faced with an outdated kitchen lacking in storage space. The refrigerator was inconveniently located in the hallway, making cooking a hassle. Tired of the neutral kitchen trend, Harney decided to inject some vibrant colors into her culinary space.
To tackle this challenging revamp, Harney enlisted the help of designer Christine Nelson. Together, they transformed the small kitchen into a lively and functional area. One standout feature is the Marmoleum flooring in a refreshing “celery green” shade. Above the stove, a custom-made tile art backsplash adorned with bubbles from a steaming pot, courtesy of Mercury Mosaics, adds a playful touch.
The lower base cabinets were painted in eye-catching orange and turquoise hues, while the upper cabinets, sink, and white quartz countertops were chosen to balance out the vibrancy. In order to make space for the refrigerator, major appliances had to be relocated. The stove now sits where the sink used to be, with the sink now placed beneath a window.
To maximize storage, a floor-to-ceiling pantry was installed in the former refrigerator space. Additionally, a floating cabinet was ingeniously utilized to work around electric baseboard heaters on one wall. In a clever move, open shelving was chosen instead of cabinets, creating more space between the refrigerator and the chimney wall.
As part of the remodel, Harney also updated her appliances, including a dual-fuel gas range and a chimney-topped hood vent. The overall result is a kitchen that not only showcases Harney’s love for bold colors but also makes cooking easier with increased storage and all essentials within arm’s reach.
Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Harney and Nelson, what was once an outdated and cramped kitchen has been transformed into a stylish, functional, and enjoyable space.
