Kaʻōnohikaumakaakeawe Kananiokeakua Holokai Lopes has been crowned Miss Aloha Hula 2024 at the prestigious Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo. Representing Hālau Ka Lā ʻŌnohi Mai O Haʻehaʻe and under the direction of her parents, Lopes danced her way to victory with a remarkable 42-point lead over the runner-up.
In addition to winning the esteemed Miss Aloha Hula title, Lopes also received the coveted Hawaiian Language award, showcasing her dedication to preserving and perpetuating the rich cultural traditions of hula.
This win is particularly special as it marks the fourth consecutive year that Hālau Ka Lā ʻŌnohi Mai O Haʻehaʻe has produced a Miss Aloha Hula, with Lopes’ sister taking home the title in 2022. Lopes wowed the judges and audience with her performances of “Aia Ka Lani Kua Ka’a I Luna” for Kahiko and “Kanani Holokai” for ‘Auana.
Competing for the Miss Aloha Hula title is no easy feat, requiring years of preparation including mastering two dances and memorizing an oli or chant. Lopes’ dedication and hard work have truly paid off, solidifying her as a standout performer in the world of hula.
Other talented contestants who participated in the competition included Amedée Kauakohemālamalama Conley-Kapoi, Nāhakuʻelua ʻĀpuakēhau Kekauoha, Heleolanimaināmakaohāʻena Hailee Jo Yokotake, and Caly Ann Kamōʻīwahineokaimana Ragonton Domingo.
