Chicago Faces Measles Outbreak Linked to City’s Largest Shelter
The Chicago Department of Public Health has confirmed a total of 10 cases of measles in the city, with 8 of them linked to the city’s largest shelter. The outbreak at the shelter has prompted a 21-day quarantine for residents, with two new cases involving children being reported.
Despite the outbreak, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that evictions tied to the 60-day limit on migrant shelter stays will proceed. However, a group of aldermen have requested a rescindment of the eviction policy, with some exceptions made for individuals in special circumstances.
More than 900 people at the shelter have been vaccinated by health officials, but the 21-day quarantine remains in effect. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) representatives are in Chicago to assist with containment efforts.
The city’s public health commissioner emphasizes the importance of vaccination to stop the spread of measles in the city. With the ongoing outbreak and efforts to contain it, the importance of vaccination and cooperation with health officials is crucial in preventing further spread of the disease.
