The FDA has recently approved a groundbreaking new drug called Xolair, developed by Genentech, for the treatment of severe allergic reactions to food. This medication is the first of its kind approved by the FDA to protect individuals against multiple food allergies, including milk, eggs, walnuts, and peanuts.
Xolair is not meant for immediate use during an allergic reaction, but rather is intended to be taken repeatedly every few weeks to reduce the risk of reactions over time. However, it is important to note that common side effects of Xolair include fever and reaction at the injection site, with a possibility of triggering anaphylaxis.
Despite the potential side effects, Xolair has shown promising results in clinical trials. A study sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases found that in a trial with 168 patients allergic to peanuts, eggs, milk, and cashews, Xolair was able to help some individuals tolerate small amounts of these foods without experiencing allergic symptoms.
The cost of Xolair ranges from $2,900 to $5,000 per month, but many individuals may qualify for lower costs with insurance coverage. With approximately 1 in 16 adults in the U.S. having a food allergy, Xolair could provide much-needed relief for many individuals, especially women and Black adults who are more affected, according to the CDC.
Xolair has previously been approved by the FDA to treat asthma, chronic hives, and chronic inflammatory sinus disease with nasal polyps. This new approval for the treatment of multiple food allergies marks a significant milestone in the field of allergy treatment, as Xolair has shown to be effective in reducing allergic reactions in patients with multiple food allergies.
