Arthur Smith, the former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, recently held a final meeting with the team after being fired. Described as “pretty tough” by members of the team, the meeting showcased the respect and admiration the players had for Smith.
During the meeting, Smith received a long and loud applause from the players, further emphasizing the positive relationship he had developed with them. One player, tight end Jonnu Smith, spoke highly of Smith and emphasized the respect he garnered from the team. Jonnu Smith had previously played under Smith when he served as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans.
Despite his dismissal, Smith assured the players that he would always be there for them. This commitment and dedication to the team did not go unnoticed, as other players also praised Smith for his leadership and support. Arnold Ebitketie particularly appreciated Smith’s valuing of the players and his willingness to help them.
While Smith had fostered strong relationships with the players, it was acknowledged that the team did not win enough games. Calais Campbell recognized Smith’s coaching abilities but also acknowledged the team’s lack of success. However, Bijan Robinson credited Smith for laying a foundation for his development as a player.
Grady Jarrett, a key player on the Falcons’ defense, expressed that the team had made strides under Smith’s leadership and hopes that defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen will be retained.
Smith’s firing came as a surprise to some, including Jeff Okudah, who played one season with the Falcons. However, Okudah understands that coaching changes are a part of the business. He wishes the best for Smith and will be keeping an eye on the team’s coaching search.
As for the Falcons’ coaching search, it remains ongoing. The team is diligently seeking a replacement for Smith, aiming to find someone who can lead them to success in the upcoming seasons.
